We do not distribute IP cameras at present.
GeoVision can turn any traditional CCTV Camera into an IP camera.
Although as IP Cameras get better in quality and price becomes more competive, they will become more popular.

Please post your experiences of IP Cameras.

Are you talking in terms of the software turns them into webcams? Or are you talking about some form of new hardware (videoserver)?

Yes, I am actually curious as well about Geovisions method of converting CCTV to IP. Is this done with a Video Server?

As for what you said regarding IP Cameras becoming popular as the price decreases and quality increases - I believe that is already happening. You can get an IP Camera for as low as $100. Many new cameras are coming out as well, similar to Axis, that offer excellent quality for high end applications of security. The IP Camera Market is deffinately starting to take off.

I have 2+ years in the IP Camera market. I run an online resource called NetworkCameraReviews.com (www.networkcamerareviews.com) that offers information regarding IP Network Video. Starting this month I will be writing articles which will discuss various aspects of IP Network Cameras. I will also be writing expert reviews of various cameras on my site.

At present, connecting a traditional CCTV Camera (e.g via BNC Connection) to GeoVision means that this camera can also work over IP.

This is because GeoVision is PC Based. Allowing the GeoVision system to take advantage of any LAN or Router connection and broadcast its cameras over the internet and make them easily accessible via Internet Explorer. By then entering the external IP Address of the GeoVision system, you can:

- access to the GeoVision systems' cameras
- control them (e.g PTZ)
- remotely save JPEG snapshots or AVI Video
- perform 2-way audio conversations
- remotely view previously recorded footage
- view multiple cameras from different GeoVision systems
(e.g. 16 different cameras from 16 different locations)
There are more things you can do, but this is a list of the most popular features.

GeoVision will also release a Video Server which can connect a CCTV Camera to the main Geovision software and allow you to integrate it by specifying the IP Address of the Video Server (as opposed to physically running cable). It can either be connected to a wired LAN or tranmitted over a wireless network.

Yes you can get some affordable IP cameras, but it's the external cameras that IP doesn't do too well in. In terms of costs anyway. A $100 camera might be fine for internal use and would probably have a CMOS lens which is not superb quality.

The point I'm making is that for external requirements, a lot of people want a weatherproof, day/ night infra red camera with vari-focal auto iris lens. The cost for an IP version would be a lot more than a traditional CCTV camera. But you can argue the extra features it may have etc etc.

But I agree it is starting to happen!

Like most things the timescales with Geovision are never great, and this is one piece of hardware that slipped back a bit. Really looking forward to seeing it in action though, there has been several times where a WIFI option would have been great.
Question,

Most IP cameras compress the image prior to transmission into mpeg4 or similar, any idea how the Geovision solution works? Streaming an uncompressed image will surely be massive, so doing this with several video servers in one location will no doubt take large amounts of bandwidth on the 802.11G network.

Streaming an uncompressed image can easily give 200 mbit for a good CCTV camera. So it is not the way for 802.11g. If we count it's practical bandwidth as 24 MBit/s.

Compression is obligatory. Personally I prefer MJPEG compression, but with MPEG-4 you theoretically you can use way more cameras.
