It’s easy to get confused with the various video resolutions touted by different manufacturers and providers of Digital Surveillance and IP CCTV systems.

And now, with the Mega Pixel resolution IP Cameras becoming more and more common place, it’s more important than ever.

So here’s a quick reference guide which should help:

QCIF = 176 x 144
CIF = 352 x 288
2CIF = 704 x 240
4CIF = 704 x 576
VGA = 640 x 480
D1 = 720 x 576 (DVD Resolution)
1.3 Mega Pixel = 1280 x 1024
3 Mega Pixel = 2048 x 1536

    Thanks for the information. I think it is amazing how far megapixel cameras and lenses have come. I understand there is a huge cost in IP but once you look at video through a IP Camera it really is amazing. CCTV does not even compare.

    Yes, we did a demonstration recently with a 3 Megapixel camera overlooking a car park. People were just blown away with the clarity and the fact that the video resolution was so wide it was effectively doing the work of two or 3 static analogue cameras!
